Free State Rugby wish players all the best

Free State Rugby says goodbye, but…

Free State Rugby is the breeding ground of opportunity.  It is a place where a player is offered the prospect to become a Springbok or to reach his full potential.

“We want players to come to the Toyota Cheetahs and even if they don’t become a Springbok, we want to give them the opportunity to make a living out of rugby,” said Franco Smith, Director of Rugby at the Toyota Cheetahs.

Players who will be leaving the Toyota Cheetahs have become heroes and every one of them has made a huge contribution towards the success of Free State Rugby.  But, they also walk away with an opportunity. The Toyota Cheetahs are not losing our players to other unions in South Africa, they were offered bigger opportunities and we wish them well on their future endeavors.

“It is the supporters that keep Free State Rugby alive.  The players doesn’t want to let the supporters down and therefore, as in the last 128 years, they will keep on playing their hearts out for Free State Rugby,” said Smith.

Players who will be leaving are:
Rynier Bernardo (unconfirmed), Clayton Blommetjies (Scarlets, Wales), Tom Botha (Ospreys, Wales), Uzair Cassiem (Scarlets, Wales), Reniel Hugo (Toyota Verblitz, Japan), Niel Marais (Yamaha Jubilo, Japan), Paul Schoeman (unconfirmed), Clinton Swart (Toyota Verblitz, Japan), Torsten van Jaarsveld (Bayonne, France), Francois Venter (Worcester Warriors, England), Carl Wegner (Toyota Verblitz, Japan), Fred Zeilinga (Canon Eagles, Japan).

An announcement of the new recruitments will be made soon.
